From simple callouses to complex problems

You have only one pair of feet and they take you everywhere — your feet are the foundation of your body. So when something goes wrong with your feet, it can affect your whole quality of life.

Free assessments

At Calmar foot clinics, our professional foot specialists will assess your foot problems and recommend effective solutions. Assessments are free and services can be provided in a variety of languages. Services are available to all age groups.

Treatment for any foot problem

Help is available for a wide range of foot-related problems, including arthritis, ankle, knee and back pain, bunions, callouses, corns, CMT, carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetic ulcers, fallen arches, hammer toes, heel pain, metatarsalgia, plantar's warts, plantar fasciitis, polio, sports/traumatic injuries and other biomechanical disorders.

Custom orthotics and orthopaedic devices

Most foot pain is the result of a faulty relationship between the bones and the muscles of the foot. Imbalances can result in abnormal foot motion which may cause a number of problems ranging from pronation, to flat feet, ankle sprains and pains, foot deformities such as bunions, clawing toes, hammer toes and corns and callouses. It can also result in rotation of the legs and sometimes affect the knees, hips and even the lower back. To help address these problems, we provide custom orthotics, extra-depth and custom footwear and shoe modifications. (See right for more information on orthotics).

We'll do a professional assessment of your hearing, and recommend effective solutions to address your needs. Our professional staff are specialists in the proper fitting and servicing of hearing devices and aids to afford maximum comfort and ease of use.

All about orthotics

What Are Foot Orthotics?

Orthotics are custom made devices designed for dynamic motion, they control the biomechanic functions of the foot, working to correct or support individual foot problems. Everyone's feet are different and because imbalances between the muscles and bones are so varied, a precise prescription for each individual is required.

How Do They Work?

As your foot rests on the orthotic it is supported and consistently directed into the correct position for walking, running and standing. With a pair of custom orthotics, pressure points, improper rotation of the foot, and painful muscle strain are relieved because your foot is functioning properly.

How Long Will I Have To Wear Them?

Foot orthotics do not cure your foot problem. Orthotics work on the same principle as eye glasses...vision is improved but they won't cure your vision problems. The orthotics simply modify the function of your foot as you continue to wear them. They can ensure that the problem does not develop further. In other words...you'll want to wear the orthotics as long as you want to avoid discomfort. Remember, your feet are the foundation for your entire body. Consistent wearing of orthotics can be the best investment you can make in your overall well-being.

What About The Cost

Unfortunately the Ontario health plan does not cover the cost of orthotic devices even though they are medically necessary and act to prevent future foot, ankle, knee, hip & lower back problems. Most extended group health insurance plans do cover foot orthotics and orthopaedic footwear either partially or fully. At Calmar, the cost is a reflection of the biomechanical examination and gait analysis, molding procedures, the orthotic, and follow-up adjustments and visits. The staff at Calmar can assist in the confidential search for alternative funding sources.

Tips for diabetics on personal foot care

Inspect your feet daily

Inspect your feet daily for blisters, cuts and scratches. You can use a mirror to see the bottoms of your feet. Always check between the toes. If your vision is impaired, have a family member inspect your feet, trim nails and buff down callouses. Wash your feet every day and dry carefully, especially between the toes. To treat dry feet, you can use a very thin coat of lubricating oil such as baby oil. Apply this after bathing and drying the feet, but be careful not to put oil or cream between the toes.

Avoid extreme temperatures

If your feet feel cold at night, wear socks. Do not apply hot water bottles or heating pads. You should never soak your feet in hot water. Avoid walking on hot surfaces such as sandy beaches or on the cement around swimming pools.

Avoid chemical treatments

Always avoid the use of chemical agents for the removal of corns and callouses, as well as corn plasters or strong antiseptic solutions. Also, never cut corns and callouses (follow special instructions from your physician or see a foot care professional).

Use poper footware

Shoes should be made of leather and fitted by foot care professionals. Do not wear shoes without stockings or sandals with thongs between the toes. Inspect the inside of shoes daily for foreign objects, nail points, torn linings and rough areas. Take special precautions during winter. Wear woolen socks and protective foot gear such as fleece-lined boots. Wear properly fitting stockings and change them daily. Do not wear mended stockings and avoid stockings with seams and tight elastic tops. Do not wear garters.

See your physician

See your physician regularly and be sure that your feet are examined at each visit. Notify your physician or a Foot Care Specialist at once should you develop a blister or sore on your foot.
